Books about Eating Disorders for Adults, Parents, and Carers

Recovery from an eating disorder or loving someone who is struggling with an eating disorder is difficult and oftentimes confusing. Please know that you deserve support and compassion too. Thankfully, there are plenty of eating disorder recovery resources specifically for parents and carers.

The following books do not specifically fall under the category of “eating disorder recovery resources,” but they may help you to develop your own understanding of factors affecting overall physical and mental health, along with providing evidence-based techniques for creating positive coping mechanisms and healthy behaviors. The complex relationship between our brain, body, mind, and environment stimulates both illness and healing. These books reveal how we can be the architects of our own health and healing.

I included books that discuss the brain/gut connection as part of this list of eating disorder recovery resources because the gut microbiome plays a significant role in understanding eating disorders. Emerging research has shown that the gut, often referred to as the “second brain,” communicates with the central nervous system, influencing our emotions and behaviors, including those related to eating. An imbalanced gut microbiome may contribute to the development and exacerbation of eating disorders, according to The Emily Program. This connection highlights the importance of a holistic approach to treating eating disorders, considering both psychological and physiological factors.
